PACKARD’S SOUTHEvening – 1 BAIRD’S SANDPIPER seen briefly and in poor light yesterday afternoon, but not thereafter and was thought by each of the observers (one independently of the other two) to be larger than nearby Dunlin. The ‘large’ size turned out to be an optical illusion. Fortunately, the finder (John Robinson) managed to digiscope the bird before it disappeared. Following some consideration of the photographs (interrupted by the Swamphen at Alkborough) and ignoring the apparent size discrepancy, the bird was re-identified this afternoon from the photographs. Once again fortunately, the bird which  had not been seen either last night nor this morning was back on the same pool this evening and was confirmed to be a Baird’s. Also present 10 Ringed Plover, 10 Dunlin, 3 Greenshank and 2 LITTLE STINT
